MISSED OPPORTUNITIES AT THE START

When England won the toss, Indian team knew that it's going to be tough because the pitch favoured batting conditions at the start. Despite this fact, Indian bowlers bowled well and created chances, but fielding disappointed as they dropped few catches.
England batsmen failed to capitalize on those mistakes and were reduced to 102/3.

ENGLAND BUILD THE PARTNERSHIP

Then came Joe Root and Moeen Ali on the crease. Both patiently build the partnership, playing soft strokes and rotating the strike. They didn't allow Indian bowlers to get over them as they dispatched bad deliveries with ease. They both showed great composure and reached their respective half-centuries in the second session. In Virender Sehwag's words Joe Root did 'root canal' of Indian bowlers.

Mohammad Shami suffered some injury and had to go off the pitch for some treatment. It looked like he won't be able to continue but he came back, although not fully fit, he continued his spell and it was visible that he was not in great shape.
After tea, Joe Root completed his 11th Test Century and England reached in a strong position. It looked like the day will end without any lose of wicket.  But Umesh Yadav dramatically caught and bowled Joe Root on 124, the decision was taken by the 3rd umpire. He took 180 balls for his 124 and took England to a strong position.

On came Ben Stokes who had 3 ducks to his name in the last series vs India so the pressure was on him. He took some time but eventually got off the mark much to his relief.
Moeen Ali patiently batted and reached in his 90's. Indian bowlers couldn't take any more wickets and England finished day 1 at 311/4 with Moeen Ali on 99* and Ben Stokes on 19*.
