Magnus Carlsen wins 2016 World Chess Championship

Magnus Carlsen Norway World Chess Champion defeated Sergei Karjakin


Raising his dominance in the Chess world, the Norwegian defeated Russia's Sergei Karjakin in quickfire tiebreaker to win the World Championship title for the third time.

With this win, the young Chess prodigy is close to the stature of the likes of Gary Kasparov. Kasparov dominated the Chess world for nearly 15 years.

Karjakin gave tough fight to Carlsen in the regular 12 rounds. Spanning from 11th to 29th November, in these 12 rounds, between both the 26-year Olds, the winner could not be decided.

Both Carlsen and Karjakin were the youngest pair ever to face-off in the world championship.

The four game rapid match was played on Wednesday to decide the winner. Each player had 25 minutes to complete their moves. And Carlsen saw off the Russian challenge in third and fourth game after drawing the first two.

Speaking of how hard he had to fight to. retain the title, he used pugilistic terms:

“For me, it’s a matter of when I get the chance, I’ll try to punch him until he finally knocks over,” Carlsen said.

Magnus Carlsen also celebrated his 26th birthday on Wednesday.

It's notable that Magnus Carlsen earlier won the title in 2013 and 2014 after defeating Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand.
